We are a society of frantic beings who rush in to fill up what could be interludes of wonderful -silence with a cacophony of voices / (many of them from “the box” in our living room). Peace and tranquility make a lot of us nervous — instead of secing them as an opportunity to be spiri- tual, we see them as a cause fora - panic because we might actually have to think about our lives! If a society hooked on talking makes it hard for angels to get a message through, so.does one where individuals are afraid of being alone. When you read about individu- als’ encounters with angels, these inevitably occur when people arc alone (and watching Letterman by yourself doesn’t count). If'we are horrified of being alone for more than 10 minutes, it makes it difficult for angels to visit us. ‘When was the last time you were physically atone in anything . resembling a quiet state? Dear Editor: . / The letter from Peter Ferris (Mailbox, Jan. 5) does much to sup- port Doug Collins’ columns on Canada’s immigration policies. When Ferris immigrated to Canada 25 years ago, he was one of a comparatively small group, all of whan had to have some designated skill or ability which Canada need- ed, and he also had to be in good health, and not the carrier of com- municable desease. That he met these conditions, and has since made a success of his life -in Canada, is to his, and Canada’s, benefit. Compare this. with today's immigration policies, both regular and refugee, and we find thousands, even hundreds of thousands of immigrants, with ao skits or train- ing, no ability to speak either of Canada's official languages, and. by decree, not allowed. to be checked for the HIV virus, or other disease, and you can only be sur- prised at the moderation shown by : Collins. Ferris forgets that his ancestors, some 200 years ago, imported hun- dreds and thousands of Irishmen to work in the factories, mills and mines of England and southern Scotland. These people had no skills, spoke a foreign language (Gaelic), and brought with them whatever disease they might be suffering. © This “blackleg” labor: was roundly condemned by many citi- zens, writers, and the press, but no one termed their comments offen- Order a Main Course at the regular price and pay only $4.95. for the second one.
