The thing that turned-his career
around was having the great for-
tune to be invited to attend Nor-
man Jewison’s Canadian Film

talking to producer Raymond Massey when the conver-

sation suddenly turns impolite.

impolite is Massey’s and first-
time feature film director David
Hauka’s latest film.

It’s a new comedy starring
Christopher Plummer, Robert
Wisdom, Kevin McNulty and
Stuart Margolin, that was chosen
the winner of the 1992 New Views
Competition, a pilot program
sponsored by B.C. Film.

Canadian Michael McKinley's
script muscled out over 65 rival
stories, including Massey's, to win
the provincial contest.

“My script is very funny, but

. it’s not like this one,’’ says the

' North Vancouver producer, who
is frantically typing away on his
computer.

“| read the script on a flight to
Toronto, and | laughed my head
off the whole way. it was hilarious.
| was already selling it before the
results were known.”’

It’s clear that Massey, 35,
doesn’t have a huge Hollywood
ego because he agreed to produce
someone else's script over his
own,

In his opinion, the competition
was long overdue and a “brilliant
move” on the part of B.C. Film,
which put up $500,000 of tax-
payers’ money to fi inance Im-
polite.

you can’t support every wannabe
film-maker, this competition at
least gives them a chance.”

Massey can relate because he’s
been through it all before.

He got the call three years ago
from his idol, Peter O'Brian, pro-
ducer of The Grey Fox and My
American Cousin, to join an elite
group of new film-makers. There,
he met some of the best directors,
screenwriters and producers in the
business.

He went into it with one
feature-length film under his belt,
The Traveller, a locally shot low-
budget movie that did suprisingly
well at North American film festi-
vals.

For Massey, the grandson of the
illustrious screen star and grand-
nephew of the former governor
general of Canada, Vincent
Massey, it was like “walking out
of the woods into a big party.
