Warehouse home raises council ire THE OWNER of a warehouse in North Van- couver City told council Monday that he will take steps to ‘remove all items used for living’? in the building and has terminated his lease with tenant Peter Schomer, who was living at the industrially zoned site. By Pamela Lang Contributing Writer Schomer originally asked coun- cil to rezone the property at 839 West Ist St. so that a 530 * square-foot illegally-built mezza- nine could be retained. But staff ‘recommended rejecting the request after failing to get Schomer’s assurances that items such as a jacuzzi, a stove and plumbing fix- tures would be removed. Council, however, agreed to defer a decision on the rezoning application after being approached by building owner, Ali Nowtash. Nowtash told council that he had. been unaware that Schomer was living in the warehouse. He said Schomer: had been evicted and that he would remove the fix- tures that made the site habitable. Nowtash said he only became aware that Schomer was living in the building about five months ago when the city took legal ac- tion against him, ordering that the residence be removed from the industrial site. Because he never interferes with or checks up on his four tenants, Nowtash said, ‘‘I was absolutcly not aware.”* He added that his primary reason for wanting to retain the addition was because of the ex- pense of removing it. Nowtash added that because Schomer cannot pay to remove the other items, Nowtash will have to foot the bill. Tf council had rejected the ap- plication before giving Nowtash the opportunity to remove the liv- ing area items, he would have had to wait a year before applying io retain the addition. Council called for a city staff report after the site renovations have been completed.
