Reform party member refutes racism charge Dear Editor: lt would be amusing if it weren't so degrading. I’m re- ferring, of course, to Sheila Copps’ reprehensible attempt to divert attention from her own inadequacies, and those of the Liberal party from whom she speaks, by comparing Reform party ‘eader Preston Manning to U.S. white su- premacist David Duke (a former neo-Nazi and Ku Klux Klan leader) and describing the Reform Party as racist and an- ti-immigrant. I want to voice my strong objection to being called a racist, and point out the ig- norance displayed in Ms. Copps’ slanderous remarks. Not only am I a member of the national Executive Council of the. Reform Party of Canada, I am also married to an African immigrant. He and our sons are obviously biack, and we most definitely will have nothing to do with any party whose leader holds racist and anti-immigrant views. To ~ the contrary, we know Preston Manning to be an unusually accepting in“vidual. if my husband, who served on the Policy Advisory Com- mittee which crafted the Reform Party’s policy on multiculturalism, does not feel that Canadian taxpayers should be asked to bear the cost of him and his sons retaining their native culture, wishing only to be free to do so on their own, is he a racist? I think not. Nor is his endorsement of the Reform party’s position oppas- ing any immigration policy based on race or creed a reflec- tion of racist views. Danita Onyebuchi Winnipeg Publication of pic shows disrespect for the public Dear Editor: The North Shore News is delivered to our office and it is kept in the waiting area for our clients and employees to see. 1 am absolutely appalled at the picture of a body on the cover of the Dec. 6 issue. It is printed in ‘total disrespect for the public, and it is at the very least distasteful. This paper is delivered to all homes and businesses on the North Shore three times a week. . There are many children who read _the paper or just look at the pic- tures before their parents have a chance to do the same. It is very § sad that a picture like this would be placed on the cover of the paper, in color, with no story. I think that this makes clear the in- telligence of you and your staff. , It is:sad, because, up to now, you have always placed scenic and often beautiful pictures on the cover. Tam thoroughly disgusted with this paper and the conscience and Believe stats on buffalo hunting Dear Editor: 1 beg to differ with Bob Leighton of - Pitt Meadows, as quoted by Paul St. Pierre, in your Nov. 15 issue, expressing disbelicf that ‘‘a little handful of American and Canadian buffalo hunters ... could slay 50 million animats.”’ This summer I attended a MacNicol. Reunion at Johnson’s Landing where I saw an old (American) newspaper clipping. As the daughter of a buffalo hunter and along with Bill Cody, Georgina MacNico! crossed the American prairies. The photograph in the clipping showed hundreds and hundreds of piles of buffalo hides heaped high, cover- ing five and 10-acre plots. The hides brought anywhere from one dollar to five dollars. morals of your editor. This is a blatant disregard of the public, and carrying the freedom of the press a little too far.
