We all Know the themes tor the
Merie Melodies and the Laones
Tunes Warner Bros. Catoon
senes, The muste has become
deeply ingrained atter tender years
spent absorbing the Cartoon
Classics. What most ofus don't
know is that Carl Stalling spent 22
vears oF his lite writing the music
toc all ot that frenetic animated ac-
taily.

Inthe 1920s, Stalling was weiting
the musical scores tor cartoons
starring an up and coming young
rodent named Mickey Mouse. But
his most memorable work was
churned out for the likes of Bugs
Bunny, Porky Pig, Datfy Duck,
Sylvester and Tweety and friends.

Hal Willner, the producer of this
compilation, tags Staller as one of
the greatest tilm music composers
and arrangers ever.

The manic music here, including
Porky In Wackyland, Stalling’s last
score, To Itch His Own, and Din-
ner Music For A Pack Of Hungry
Cannibals, speaks for itself. It's
quick, it’s witty and it's — to lifta
rap term — in yo face!

Beethoven Lives Upstairs and Mr,
Bach Comes To Call, Mozart's
Mavic Fantasy distills Mozart's The
Magic Flute, But opera, with its
bombastic vocals and Byzantine
plot twists, remains an acquired
taste for many.

However, tor this project Ham-
mond takes the core musical
themes and ties them together
with the narrative participation of
a little girl called Sarah and an ac-
companying talking dragon. The
two adventurers travel through the
world of the Queen of the Night
and Sarastro’s castle in search of a
