22 - Wednesday, October 4, 1989 - North Shore News North Shore girls’ volleyball teams among B.C.’s best THE NORTH Shore's reputation as the dominant power in girls’ volleyball across the province, earned in recent years with numerous B.C. championships and other high placings by several different schools, is nat likely to dimiiish this season. In fact, this could be the best year ever as at least four schools in the 10-team North Shore league mighi soon be ranked among the top half- dozen teams in B.C. Currently West Vancouver Highlanders are ranked first, Sentine! Spartans third and Handsworth Royals fourth among ‘“‘AA’’ schools (those with 150 o7 more girls in Grades 11 and 12) while Windsor Dukes also look good enough to join them by the time the next rankings come out. The Highlanders, attempting to become the fourth straight North Shore school to win the B.C. ‘tAA” championships after Sutherland Sabres, Sentinel and fast year Handsworth, went undefeated to win last weekend's 20-school Douglas College invitational tourney. They stopped Sentinel in the final, while Windsor and Carson Graham Eagles also finished well. West Vancouver, coached by Wayne Desjardins and led by Grade 11 setter Tiffany Martino, has a solid starting lineup made up mostly of veterans. Handsworth, under Mike Rockwell, has setters Michelle Lachmann, a Grade 12 player who made the B.C. first all-star team last season and who could be the best player in the province this time around. The Royals’ starting lineup aiso includes Grade 11 Katherine Donovan, another key player in last year’s playoffs, and two Grade 10s in Joann Paterson and Ami-Jo Dunn. With coach Glem Close at the helm, Sentinel has the youngest of the four local powerhouse squads with 10 of 12 players in Grade 11, in- cluding power hitter Samantha Carter who was named the outstanding player at the Douglas College tourney. Windsor, coached by Boh Vosburgh, has Grade 12s Megan Magee, Dians Osborne 2nd Tiffany Chester back from last year plus Susie Jaros. With most of the top teams in the province entered in this weekend's 28-school University of Victoria tournament and the following weekend’s U.B.C. invitational with 24 teams, the North Shore reputation will be on the line early.
