The 24-year-old graduate of Hillside Secondary and North Vancouver resident has post sec- ondary training in small business management and accounting. She is currently employed by Hanwor Construction as opera- tions manager. But her passionate interest in life is horses and riding, which she began when she was just nine years old at the North Shore Equestrian Centre. As the years went on, Hanley took on part - time jobs while at- tending school to heip finance her expensive hobby. “T was a country girl growing up in the city,’? Hanley recalls. She soon became experienced at showing horses, progressing to the national level of Appaloosa Show Horse Competition. Moving to Langley for a few years, Hanley became interested in team roping, a timed rodeo event that involves two riders coor- dinating their efforts and their horses to lasso the head and the heel of a steer. “It was very exciting and challenging,’’ says Hanley, whose success was such that she was named Rookie of the Year by the B.C. Team Ropers Association in 1987 as well as High Point Header by the Fraser Valley Region. Her riding brought her the top marks in the horsemanship rideoff — one of the events in the Miss Cloverdale contest. Sponsored by the B.C. Reined Cow Horse Association, Hanley was also tested on her knowledge of rodeo and judged at a public speaking event where they ad- dressed the topic of how to best promote the sport of rodeo.
