This extra demand on the engine
causes a decrease in engine
vacuum. Vacuum is one of the
main factors in transmission shif-
tiag control.

The transmission responds by
remaining in a lower gear longer
or, sometimes, downshifting to
lighten the engine’s burden.

This sensitive interrelationship
between the engine and the
transmission requires that both be
functioning properly for efficient
performance, says the Car Care
