film Life would have been | susxi 26 — Wednesday, April 5, 1989 — North Shore News better without Zoe THREE OF America’s top directors contribute a segment to this trilogy of short stories about their favorite city. First up is Martin Scorsese's Life Lessons (**'4), a stylish look at the complex relationship between a passionate painter, Lionel Dobie (Nick Nolte) and his assistant, Paulette (Rosanna Arquette). Al- though they no longer share a bed, they stalk the same studio. She dabbles with other men in front of him, while he jealously tries to rein her in. Nolte is at his slovenly best, hopelessly obsessed with this live- in pupil who seems to be using him for her own selfish career reasons. He, on the other hand, is feeding on the turmoil. Slashing away at his enormous canvas, Lionel releases his frustration while trying to whip up some pieces for a gallery showing. Scorsese's trademark swirling camera makes for an exhilarating start that quickly comes to a screeching halt with the second item, Francis Coppola's Life With Zoe (*). If only it was life without Zoe. instead, we are subjected to the improbable adventures of a rich 12-year-old (Heather McComb), attempting to reunite her estrang- ed parents (Talia Shire and Gian- carlo Giannini). Self-consciously cute, this middle story is childish instead of childlike. Saving the best for last, we have Woody Allen’s Oedipus Wrecks (***). Woody plays Sheldon, a successful lawyer still cringing whenever he sees his nagging mother (Mae Questel). TIM BELL film reviewer Wishing she would just disap- pear, he is delighted when she mysteriously vanishes during a magician’s act. But her reap- earance shortly thereafter is a hi- jarious exaggeration of the dominating mother syndrome. Woody once again returns to his specialty of comedic fantasy to make New York Stories a two- thirds success. Well, two out of three ain’t bad. Clean and Sober **% (Warner Home Video) Rated R Michael Keaton flexes his serious acting muscles in this drama about chemical dependency. Daryl Foynter (Keaton) is having Photos probe theories MONTREAL ARTIST Nicole Jolicoeur will exhibit a new work created for Présentation House Gallery from April 8 to May 7. The work continues Jolicoeur’s research on the 19th century Pari- sian neurologist Jean-Martin: Char- cot and his theories on feminine hysteria. The gallery conception of this new work developed largely in response to the gallery's selection of a second April exhibit, Master- pieces of Medical Photography. “My intention was to establish a dialectical relation with that ex- hibition by destabilizing the effect Many, many styles to choose from. of truthfulness connected to photography, especially scientific photography, and by pointing up the fictional dimension at work both in the manipulation of photographs and in the constitu- tion of theory,’ said Jolicoeur. The exhibition will be accom- panied by a publication by Jolicoeur and Toronto psychiatrist-writer Jeanne Ran- dolph, produced by the gallery. Opening night is Apri! 7 from 8 to 10 p.m. Joliceeur will give a talk on her work April 10 at 7:30 p.m. For more information phone Presentation House, 986-1351. A golden opportunity seems to pres- ent itself in the shape of a drug rehab centre that guarantees ano- aymity. During the thirty-day pro- gram, Daryl realizes this sanctuary may well be his salvation. Keeping him on the uphill path are a counsellor (Morgan Freedman), an A.A. sponsor (M. Emet Walsh) and a fellow recovering junkie (Kathy Baker). Keaton does a very good job engaging our sympathy for a yup- pie character who is selfish and mean-tempered. ‘“‘Moonlighting’’ creator Glenn Gordon Caron plays down the cliches.
