It is evident over the years, that the Christmas CounterAtlack campaigns continue to reduce drink- ing-driving accidents during the holiday season. The 1988-89 campaign marked the fifth year in a row that roadcheck activities broke records, with more vehicles checked and proportionally fewer drinking-driving charges being laid. The same winning combination of public education, police enforcement and community support is being applied to this spring campaign. Motorists who drink and drive will be caught. And they should realize that the government has made ae n impaired conviction drinking-driving penalties even more severe. In addition to a $300 to $2,000 fine and up to six months in jail on a first offence, the government has increased the minimum prohibition from driving by 100 per cent — from six months to one year. The penalty for driving while prohibited involves an automatic jail sentence. Spring CounterAttack and the increased driving prohibition are only the beginning of the govern- ment’s renewed initiatives to deter drinking drivers. The CounterAttack budget has been increased by 180 per cent to over $1 million in order to extend public education and assist the police. As well, the newly formed Traffic Safety Directorate, under the solicitor general, will be considering a range of proposals to reduce this tragic and costly crime. than your licence, your job and your self-respect. It could also cost you your freedom. So please. For your sake and the sake of your passengers, don't drink and drive.
