Dear Editor: The North Shore News has suc- ceeded in creating for its readers something that is very rare: a legiti- mate moral dilenuma. I think the frustration and anger many readers are expressing against the opinion pieces written by Doug Collins comes from being trapped by this dilemma. On the one hand | think Mr. Collins has every legal right to write what he does, On the other hand what he wriles is morally rep- rehensible. By this -imean his opinion pieces can easily be shown to be bigoted, sexist, racist and homo- phobic, [also find his essays to be unacceptable from the standpoint of journalistic or professional ethics, For example, Mr. Collins criti- cizes a movie he has never seen, he is unaware (or unconcertied) about the origins and significance of the controversial term “politically cor- rect,” and he uses fallacious argu- * ments against gays and women. An ethical journalist woukd not write in this manner, The moral dilemma U find myself in is that, on the one hand, every time I pick up a copy of your . paper | know that J am implicitly “For all of us, the war was a waste of the best years of our lives.” Second World War veteran and prisoner of war Arthur Holmes, on war. (From a Nov. 9 North Shore News story.) “My feeling is that people kill, not guns. The greatest majority of guns are owned by legitimate people who take legitimate care in the handling and use of them.” North Vancouver RCMP : Superintendent Gil Yard, on Wal- Mart’s plans to sell rifles at its -.North Vancouver outlet. Yet, on the other hand. | feel that the North Shore News is indeed “the voice of North and West Vaneouver.” [tis the only paper which gives me a local per- spective on the news as well as focal events. So | want to read it and support it. but at the same time i don't want lo support the racism, sexism. and soon that Me. Collins promotes, Hahink that the frustration and anger many of your readers, and local merchants, have expressed comes from feeling that, because censorship is wrong, Me. Collins* writing is forcing them to abandon their local paper. The general solution to this dilemma is dependent on Mr. Collins. Peter B. Raabe North Vancouver Relishing newspaper's bright ray of Sunshine Dear Editor: tn respect to the objections you have received regarding your Sunshine Girl feature, TE can’t help wondering what kind of miserable existence these poor protesting souls must lead. Isnt there enough sorrow and stress in most people's lives to jus- tify a small ray of sunshine in our local newspaper? The pictures are very tasteful and are enjoyed, | am sure, by the vast majority of your readers.
