A battery’s output decreases as temperature drops, so a battery that was doing its job during the warm summer months may have only half of its output when the thermometer dips below freezing. Meanwhile, your cold engine may need twice te starting power. If your car is hard to start because of a weak battery, replace it before it lets you down, suggests the Car Care Council of the Automotive Industries Association of Canada. When buying a bat- tery, you'll be selecting from among several within the size range that fits your car. In addition to price, your decision may be based on length and type of warranty, cold cranking amps and reserve capacity. The latter indicates how long the battery will hold up without recharging. This usually is express- ed in amperes of output per so many minutes. The council re- minds car owners that, when com- paring battery specifications, one must compare output and reserve on the same amperage/time basis. Typically, reserve capacity rating will refer to the amount of time a battery can produce 25 amps at 27°C. (Headlights may draw about 15 amps versus a tail light's 1.5 amps.) Cold cranking amps refers to the engine starting (cranking) output at -17°C for thirty seconds. A starter may draw 400 amps, so at -17°C it wouldn't take Iong on a cold morning to drain a battery rated at 300 cold cranking amps. When idling along in stop-and- go traffic, with heater/defroster, tape deck and lights turned on, the electrical system is carrying a heavy ioad. It's comforting to know there’s a strong battery under the hood. That security is Polymeric electrolyte makes windows work From page 22 workable replacement for the lead acid battery (discovered in the 19th century) that would be lighter, more powerful and entirely com- posed of organic materials. One probleni *9 overcome is the fact that organic materials being investigated take up water, resulting in deterioration of the battery. Stevens says the solid electrolyte he is using seems to be more resis- tant to taking up water and is made from chemicals that are cheap and commonly used in in- dustry. The recipe sounds pretty simple, but unlikely: a surfactant plus an acrylic plastic (Plexiglas) and a dash of salt. Many scientists might be skep- tical that Plexiglas could be made to permit ions to move through it, says Stevens, who has conducted extensive studies on the chemical combinations we know as glass. A chemical diagram of his electrolyte would look like a loose network or mesh of the molecules that make up Plexiglas. Draped on this net- work are long-carbon-chain molecules (with properties similar to a surfactant or detergent) that have oxygens in their backbone. Some of the oxygens are complex- ed with a lithium salt. The com- bination is a solid, adhesive, transparent electrolyte. Stevens discovered the formula for the solid electrolyte while on sabbatical in 1984/85 at the Chalmers University of Techno- logy in Sweden. He has applied to patent the technology through the Swedish patent office. NORTH VAN UNDERCOATINC AND DETAILING GENTRE well worth the modest cost of upgrading from adequate to best.
