ing a recording and occasionally
speaks from his ego rather than his
mind but more often, he was a
caring man and at one point, Len-
non tries to talk some sense into a
glassy-eyed hippie who has seen
“hidden messages’ in some
Beatles songs.

When he realizes he’s not get-
ting through, John quietly asks him
if he's hungry and invites him in
for a meal. :

These intimate moments are
abundant. Lennon was constantly
in the camera’s eye throughout
most of his life and shared just
about everything with a frequently
painful honesty.

Highlighting the film are his
songs and some great Jive perfor-
mances which have been remixe
to give a fresh punch to old
favorites.

By the film’s end, you'll have a
vivid insight into someone who
matured from adored moptap to
peace promoter to househusband,
displaying a good sense of humor
throughout the ordeal.

THE OLD joke about foreign films,
“| read a great movie last night’’,
just does not apply to this French
tragedy.

Put aside the western prejudice
against subtitles, and you will be
treated to a sweeping epic of a
double bill based on Marcel
Pagnol’s novel,

In the first part, a hunchbacked

beautiful countryside of Provence.

To ensure this, they have blocked
Jean’s spring prior to his arrival.
The locals, under Cesar’s sway,
treat the outsider with disdain.
During a drought, they remain
tight-lipped about the spring, even
while watching Jean’s heart-break-
ing attempts to save his crops. Ina
tragic climax, the Soubeyrans win.
Manon picks up the story 10
years later. Jean’s failure has been
his neighbor's gain. Manon (Em-
manuelle Beart) is a gorgeous
shepherdess who lives quietly in
the house where her family's
dreams died. ;

unable to declare his passion, is
driven to distraction.

The story concludes when
Manon discovers the conspiracy

her revenge on the town and the
Soubeyrans.
