Fix that leaky toilet

ONE OF the most common pro-
blems around the home is the leak-
ing or running toilet.

Here are some of the common
problems found in modern toilets
and their easy solutions.

1. Preventing tank from overfill-
ing

e If tank fills higher than nor-
mal fill level, the problem is usual-
ly in the ballcock.

© Shut off water supply.

© Remove thumb screws A and
B, (Fig. 2), thus making it possible
to lift out the float arm and valve
plunger C.

° Check washer, D, on end of
valve plunger. Replace if worn.
This usually will correct the over-
fill problem.

e If the tank continues to over-
fill after replacing the washer,
check to make sure the operating
lever at the end of the float arm is
functioning properly.

2. If tank fails to shut off

* Continuous running after
flushing is often caused by im-
proper fitting of the stopper ball,
A, (Fig. 1), into the valve seat.

® To correct, check to see if the
stopper guide, C, (Fig. 1), is pro-
perly aligned with i/i¢ valve seat.

e if correcting the alignment
does not stop the water from runn-
ing, cut off the water supply,
remove the stopper ball, clean with
extra fine emery cloth and replace.

“If cleaning the stopper ball stil!
does not correct the problem,
replace the stopper ball or the
valve seat, or perhaps both.

3. If water continues to run
through overflow tube

© Lift the float arm, D, (Fig. 1).
Jf this stops the water flow, the
trouble is probably in the float, E.

* Remove the float. if the float
ball contains water, replace it.

¢ If the float ball does not con-
tain water, bend the float arm
slightly downward. This will lower

does not stop the water flow, turn
off the water supply, remove the
valve plunger, F, and replace the
washer as previously described.

° If replacing the washer does
not correct the problem, it may be
necessary to replace the entire
ballcock.
