Philippine earthquake
victim relief sought

A NORTH Shore group is appeal-
ing to the public to help with ear-
thquake relief in the Philippines.

The North Shore chapter of the
Save the Children Fund of B.C.
(SCF) sells greeting cards and
handcrafted items in’ order to
sponsor a Sri Lankan family and
support other SCF projects.

Recently, the SCF of B.C. es-
tablished an emergency relie! fund
ta give assistance to victims of the
recent series of carthquiakes in the
Philippines.

Two coalitions of Philippine
non-governmental organizations
(NGO) have requested help for
immediate relief efforts in three
worst areas of central and nor-
thern Luzon, concentrating on
Baguio, Dagupan and Cabana-
tuan.

“Initial estimates of death and
damage were greatly
understated,’* an SFC press
release emphasized. “The need for
NGO emergency assistance is crit-
ical.”

proached the Canadian Interna
lional Development Agency and
secured $150,000) from = their In-
ternational Humanitarian
Assistance Fund.

The Canadian NGOs hase al-
ready raised = $50,000; however,
another $50,000 in additional
funds are required Cor the disaster
telief program being launched.

The money donated by Cana-
dians will be used tor such
emergency items as bottled water,
tents, blankets, took, canned
food, and medicines as well as
other basic necessities.

Funds donated to the Save the
Children Fund of B.C. will) be
coursed through the Philippine
Development Assistance Program
in Ottawa, which is the Canadian
coordinating body for Canadian
NGOs currently undertaking pro-
jects in the Philippines.

All donations will be issued a
tax receipt. Cheques can be made
payable to the Philippine Relief
Fund and sent to the Save the
Children Fund of B.C., 325 Howe
St., Vancouver, V6C 1Z7.
