Some- i wis times. I’m all in favor of saving the bears even though I don’t know one. The whales are on my happy-list, too. But there are times when our professional world-savers are pains and pests. They are pains and pests when they jump in simply because their reflexes tell them to, which is what has happened in the fuss over whether BC Rail should spray her- bicide on the jolly old blackberry bushes and other green stuff be- tween Ambleside and Horseshoe Bay. One could get the impression, for instance, that hordes of West Vannies are hiding their kids and screaming themselves hoarse about the fate that awaits them if the right-of-way is anointed with weed-killer. In fact, no more than half-a-dozen ever turned up at a recent hearing on the issue. There is concern, of course. Cit- izens Against Pesticide Spraying (CAPS) claims. it has 1,000 signatures backing the appeal for a ban. But that’s no surprise, really. There are buzz words that bring people to their doors in a rush, pen in hand. Yes, anyone would sign a petition against cancer, floods, earthquakes or knocking babies on the head. Pesticide is such a buzz word, it having been officially listed as a villain — often rightly. So if the CAPS people had appeared at my door — I live about 100 yards Man jailed for theft A 39-YEAR-OLD Vancouver man was sentenced Thursday in North Vancouver provincial court to 3 é three months in jail after he plead- : x 4 ed guilty to theft under $1,009. i OE BO CR, i Ronald William Lewis was orig- i REG 38 00 irially charged jointly with Kirk Donald Hunt, 22, also of Van- couver, with theft and possession from the track — 1 would proba- bly have signed with gusto. Why be unneighborly? (To pick nits for a moment, Cit- izens Against Pesticide Spraying may make a neat anagram, but it’s a bad choice of name. The substance in dispute is glysophate, a herbicide sold under the brand name, Roundup. It is not a pesticide.) Mind you, I don’t blame the West. Vannies for being worried. Pesticides! Herbicides! Right at the back door! What next?! But I ask you to note that the minute the buzz word is heard, eager folk ap- pear who never heard of West Van before. The same thing happened in the South Moresby dispute. From as far afield as Australia, ‘‘experts’’ declared the place to be the Cana- dian Galapagos, a sacred heritage that should lie untouched in per- manent fog and storm. Which was a real lark, if you ask me. Our blackberry bushes are not in that league, but the CAPS people have not lacked extraneous sup- port. There was Mary O’Brien of the northwest Coalition for Alter- native to Pesticides, for example. She hails from Oregon, ‘is a pro- fessional anti-herbicidist, and can’t sleep, it seems, for worrying about West Van's blackberry bushes. A fem lawyer flew in from Ed- monton to give evidence, and another star from afar was Mr. Lloyd Manchester, national presi- dent, no less, of Earthcare. He comes from Kelowna. Mr. Manchester has been described in the prints (including this newspaper) as a lawyer. Well, I have not seen him, so for all I know he may look like a lawyer and even talk like a lawyer. In fact, though, he is a cook and deck hand on a B.C. Forest Products tug. I know that because I asked BCFP about him and they con- firmed it. I also have two phone numbers for him but have not been able ta raise him despite my being desperate 10 find out how many members of which he is national president. Has Earthcare now gone to earth? The fate of our blackberry bushes has been well covered from the CAPS’ point of view, but some of the other side’s arguments have not received such biz play. As an ignoramus where chemi- cals are concerned, I cannot pro- nounce on whether glysophate is harmful. But the World Health Organization, the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency all give it a good rating. So does the Royal Society of Chemis- try in the U.K. Its degree of toxicity is lower than that of aspirin or salt, mean- ing it is ‘almost non-toxic.”’ Is this all a storm in a teacup, much ado about nothing, and see- ing through a glass, darkly?
