By MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writer There is already a waiting list to get into the 42-unit, $3 million apartment project that is scheduled to be constructed this year at 606 14th Street. Approval was granted following a public hearing in which concerns over traffic and parking were rais- ed. The housing project will be located adjacent to Hollyburn Elementary School, which handles French Immersion classes, daycare and children’s sporting activities. “While recognizing that seniors housing is a worthwhile project, there is great concern in the school about the additional strain the resulting increase in traffic will have on the already busy streets around Hollyburn School,’’ said Elizabeth Demner, chairperson of the Hollyburn/Pauline Johnson School Association. Demner urged council to under- take a thorough traffic study of the area. She admitted that existing traffic problems are being created _ by the parents dropping off and picking up their children. “Additional traffic could all too easily cause the tragedy we have been fortunate enough to avoid so far,"’ she added. ‘We have to come up with a better traffic flow in the area,’ added local mother Linda Miller. Director of operations Don Walker said the same problem ex- ists near all the district’s schools, and that staff is working on it.
