Oram was elected at the associa- tion’s 24th annual conference August 20-23 in Toronto. The United Ostomy Association encompasses all of North America plus Hawaii and the U.S. protec- torates. The United Ostomy Association is a volunteer, self-help rehabilita- tion organization, dedicated to those who have had or will have ostomy surgery. DAVID ORAM...elected to the national board of directors of the United Ostomy Association. UOA, one of the largest volun- teer organizations in the U.S. and Canada, is 50,000 plus strong, consisting of 660 local chapters throughout North America. There are nine chapters in B.C., including the. Vancouver chapter which has 370 mémbers. Oram has served in all positions of the Vancouver chapter and was the B.C. representative for UOA for seven years. The head office of the United Ostomy Association is located in Los Angeles. Anyone interested in UOA can contact Oram at 988- 6780. Another B.C. man, Dave Met- calfe of Victoria, was honored by the association when he received the Sam Dubin award. This award is the highest given by the United Ostomy Association. SPECIAL EVENTS PLANNED Met. Seymour park celebrates birthday MT. SEYMOUR Provincial Park turns 50 years this month, Cele- brations on Sept. 27 will mark this special birthday. During its long history, Mt. Seymour has been visited by mil- lions of Lower Mainland outdoor enthusiasts, and the public is now invited to join in celebrating the continued popularity of this wilderness provincial park at Van- couver's doorstep, Mt. Seymour became a popular ski area during the 1930s as Van- couver grew and people sought recreational activities in the nearby mountainous playgrounds. Out- door enthusiasts could drive or take a bus to the Mushroom Park- ing Lot, then hike up the remain- ing 500 metres. A lodge was built in 1936, the same year that Mt. Seymour became a provincial park. Log cabins also provided overnight shelter as it was not possible to hike up, ski and return in the same day. Today an extensive trail system exists; there is excellent family- oriented skiing and ful! facilities. A paved highway provides access to the mountain. On Saturday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mt. Seymour wili offer free chairlift rides, live enter- tainment, a ski swap and a full range of other activities that will interest young and old alike. Food highlights include the renowned Bear Burger offered at the 1940s price of 99¢ and blueber- ry pie for 25¢, Jerry the Moose, B.C. Parks unique birthday mascot, will make a guest ap- pearance, bringing special birthday momentos for kids and parents alike.
