Then, he worked to adapt the televison version to the stage. “On television the camera can turn and everybody can get out of the way when the camera is not on them,”’ he explains. ‘‘On stage you have to have reasons why people go through doors.” But although the scripts are taken directly from the originals, the players are determined not to duplicate the characters from the series. Instead, they try to bring their own special something to the characters. “There was a danger to shoot out and get the videos and just copy it,’ recounts Soden. “I've made a conscious effort not to mimic the television charac- ter,” he explains. ‘‘It’s basically my and the director’s view of the character.”” Nendick agrees. ‘*‘It is a great temptation to turn it (the television show) on instead of letting it come naturally,”’ he says. “The tendency is to try and recreate John Cleese’s Basil Fawl- ty,’ Wedding says in reference to the show’s primary character, played by Cleese. ‘*That not only is just about impossible but it wouldn’t be the same. “Tt wouldn’t be funny,’* he predicts. Nendick admits that the com- pany's upcoming 13-show run at the Vancouver East Cultural Cen- tre from Sept. 18 to Oct. 4 is “quite a daunting prospect.’’ The idea of performing before 300 people a night has doubled his stage fright, he jokes. Wedding describes the run as fantastic and points out that few amateur companies ever perform at the Vancouver theatre. “We're looking forward to do- ing it,’ says Nendick.
