Mi mailbox | ><] wae Dear Editor: Re: The case of Martin Wouters and his Pet Hens. I know from experience with a large variety of pets that birds, including the poultry family, make ex- cellent pets. Chickens have their own individual ‘per- sonalities’, communicate sur- prisingly well with their owners, keep a garden very Can your dog lay clear of insects when let out under supervision, (as oppos- ed to spraying toxic insec- ticides about, sometimes the ill-effects of which can ex- tend beyond property boun- daries), are completely inof- fensive and as an added bonus, - lay eggs. Dogs, which | greatly ap- preciate are, of course, much more fashionable as pets. However, they. break off and dig out valuable plants; at- tack, injure and sometimes kill other pets, e.g., cats; distract motorists; sometimes causing accidents; tip over garbage cans, slowing down the pick-up process, thus making the latter more costly to taxpayers, and helping the tat population prosper. In addition, I have yet to gs? see a dog lay an egg! The therapeutic value of pets has been well researched and has been proven to be very beneficial to large numbers of people. With our rapidly mounting health care costs, this fact is too impor- tant to ignore! Dr. R.J. Long West Vancouver, B.C. Chicken ban ‘ridiculous’ Dear Editor: I am writing in reply to North Shore News article ‘“‘Aldermen giving boot to teenager’s pets’? - Martin Wouters chickens - which ap- peared in the Friday July 13 edition. For many years. chicks have been sold in pet stores at Easter and displayed at shop- ping malls to the delight of many youngsters. Pre- Wrong Dear Editor: ] am writing in response to Bob Hunter’s article, of June 29 on Switzerland. While |! admit that, as Mr. Hunter states, ‘‘there are plenty of things about Switzerland to envy’’, I feel that the article implies, wrongly, that the course that country has chosen is a good one for others to follow. First, Hunter suggests that a country should give ‘‘real power’’ to its appointed senate. How can a country run by appointed officials be declared a democracy? Second, | was shocked to see Hunter, a one-time anti- nuclear activist, suggest that the ‘‘American nuclear um- brella’’, is anything to ‘‘lounge under’’. More serious is the article's praise of Switzerland's defence policy as contrasted with Canada’s. The Swiss are schoolers as well as grade school children have also par- ticipated in the raising of young chicks which have been hatched from eggs in the classroom. If there is a potential for health problems from the keeping of poultry as sug- gested by Alderman Joan Gadsby, then surely chickens would never have been allow- ed in crowded shopping malls let alone the classroom. But idea satisfied to protect only themselves, with no concern for anyone else. If this were not the case, wouldn’t Switzerland be striving, fron its so-called neutral “stand- point, to reduce East-West tensions? Perhaps its nuclear bomb shelters would be of use if one or two nuclear weapons were used on neighboring countries. But there is ample reason to believe that they would be ineffective in a full nuclear exchange. Besides, if all countries were as confi- dent of their survival as Switzerland is, the chances of a nuclear war would be great- ly increased, since no one would any longer be doubtful of the risks that they were taking. And that, obviously, iS a rather serious implication. Eric Steig West Vancouver, B.C For the ladies Dear Editor: How about something to tiullate the female palate for a change! Perhaps you could send a about’’ to look for some *‘smashing’’ looking guys I'm sure there must be some on the North Shoret! J Sammel wait, the chickens in question which have caused all the clucking are different - they’ve had all their shots and are kept in a chicken house. Banning chickens entirely from North Vancouver District by tightening up the by-law simply because one of Mr. Wouters’ ‘‘neighbors’’ complained (they’d probably yell even louder if the Wouter family had a dog that barked at night and got into the gar- bage), is discriminatory, un- fair and ridiculous. If citizens wish to raise chickens then they should be allowed to do so with perhaps a special permit providing they meet specific re- quirements and ensure that the chickens are properly cared for. Mrs. P.J. McDonald North Vancouver, B.C. Thanks to all Open letter to: All sponsors, donors, judges, officials and interested par- ties of the 1984 Miss North Shore Pageant. (Mrs.) Gerti Todd Association Coordinator A? - Friday, July 20, 1984 - North Shore News Dear Editor: As an employee in Edge- mont Village, I really would like to draw attention to the problem of crosswalks in the area. Recently, underwent a program and beautiful new brick crosswalks but motorists don’t seem to realize they ex- ist! A few weeks ago, a pedestrian was struck on Edgemont & Crescentview Drive and more recently Edgemont installed revitilization _Control crosswalks several people barely missed being hit by cars travelling well above a safe speed.
