Restraint increases deficits

Dear Editor:

Ed Broadbent summed up
the national debate by poin-
ting out that both the other
leaders promised both job
creation and a reduced deficit
even though both goals can
not be attained simultaneous-
ly in the short run. If the
government spends less so as
to reduce the deficit you will
end up with more unemploy-
ment. Bennet proved this in
B.C. with his excessive
restraint program. We now
have the highest unemploy-
ment after Newfoundland. ,“

The Liberal record over <ne
last four years has been more
moderate. They allowed the
deficit to build up in order to
protect the social services net
sO as to preserve for us the
just society that Trudeau pro-

mised. This moderate ap-
proach to the deficit is pro-
bably the reason that the
unemployment rate national-
ly has not followed B.C.’s
lead upwards.

Mulroney also stresses job
creation but if he makes John
Crosbie the Finance Minister,
as seems to be the case, then
there is no way that net job
creation will take place. This
is because Crosbie has always
advocated a Bennett style ap-
proach in cutting govenment
spending. Unemployment is
sure to rise if fiscal restraint
is apphed any further. If
Mulroney wants us to
seriously believe that he
places job creation as a
higher priority to cutting the
deficit he should promise
Canadians that Crosbie will

not be made Finance
Minister.

For those of you who
believe, like Crosbie and Ben-
nett, that restraint is the way
to recovery I give the follow-
ing example in rebuttal. Sup-
pose that we al) restrained
ourselves to the poimt where
everyone bought only ab-
solute necessities. If this was
the case we would have well
over 70% unemployment
because it t@kes Jess than
30% of the work force to
produce all of our basic
necessities. Restraint
therefore is not the way to
recovery but instead the way
to more unemployment, less
tax revenue, and therefore

even worse deficits in the
long run.

ed - with ample warning to
discuss solely issues relating
to nuclear disarmament. Last
week, Mr Colin Wong, Con-
servative candidate, refused
to attend a= similar Alb

for the Vancouver-Kingsway
riding.

The refusal of these in-
dividuals to stand up and be
counted on the most impor-
tant issue confronting Cana-
dians today is an affront to
the voters and an outrage.

From my observation, all
of the attending candidates in
the North Vancouver-
Seymour meeting gave

I really am = grateful to
Doug Collins for giving me
background information of
lona Campagnolo (‘‘Get This
Straight’’: No Sweetheart,
lona, Aug. 19, 1984). Not be-
ing a Liberal voter, | didn’t
know much about Ms. Cam-
pagnolo except that she had
grown up in a poor family on
the Queen Charlotte Islands

and must have worked hard
to get to where she is now. I
didn’t ksow she was sym-
pathetic to power oppressed
minority groups such = as
women and Asian refugees or
that she had travelled around
the world trying to help peo-
ple in disadvantaged Third
World countries. 1 didn’t
even know that she stood up
for the peace issue and would

ning nuclear war and
Canada’s role in encouraging
or discouraging the prolifera-
tion of nuclear weaponry.
Why has the Conservative
party refused to discuss this,
or to take a clear position? |

a mistake but we shouldn’t
let those mistakes stop us
from returning to an
economic policy that was
designed for recessions like
the one we now face.
