= All - Sunday, April 1, 1984 - North Shore News Around the province THE PROCESS of re- opening B.C.’s pulp mills continues today as com-' panies and unions’ work‘: toward the legislated 72-hour deadline for getting back to work. Legislation introduced Friday orders the lock-out of pulp workers lifted and the mills put back into operation by Monday. At the same time, talks between the pulp companies and the unions, with medi- ator Clark Gilmor between the two, will re-open as the two sides attempt to reach a settlement that has so far eluded them. Premier Billi Bennett, in his television address Thursday night, said that unless that settlement is reached, the provincial government will be forced to legislate a settlement, something that neither side wants. Both Canadian Pulpworkers Union presi- dent Art Gruntman and pulp company representative Dick Heinrich disputing teacher shortage EDUCATION MINISTER Jack Heinrich is disputing a provincial government report — which he says he hasn’t seen yet that predicts there will be a shortage of teachers in B.C. within three years. The report predicts a shortage of 1,600 elementary and secondary school teachers by 1987, increasing to 1,840 teachers by 1992. The shortage will come about because of the so called ‘‘echo baby boom’’ which has resulted in creased birth rates kindergarten enrolment. “*T find it a little difficult to accept (the prediction) in view of the number of teachers who currently are unemployed,’’ Heinrich said this week. Heinrich also disputed some of the figures con- tained in the report, pointing out that September enrol- ment in B.C. schools was 478,500 students and not the 497 ,000 used in the study. The report was prepared in- and Davis wants to break up Hydro MLA Jack Davis says B.C. Hydro has become too large and should be broken up. Davis, MLA for North Vancouver, has called for Hyrdo to limit its operations to producing and providing electricity. The gas division should be sold off and the Hydro railway should be combined with B.C. Rail, Davis says. YOU CAN WIN!
