Ree bac Dear Editor: As a result of a deliberately misleading statement made by the Office and Technical Employees Union, any fur- ther statements made by them should be suspect. They placed a large advertisement op Page 2A of your January 1, 1984 edition. In that adver- tisement the Union has used a statement I made that ‘‘in essence ICBC was effective and efficient’’ to support the proposition that ‘‘Even EROLA, . We go along with Mr. Hunter’s views on metrifica- tion one hundred per cent. There was nothing wrong with his working. Girl is in poor taste Dear Editor: I take exception to the “Sunshine Girl’’ photo printed in the Decembcr 10 issuc of the North Shore News. For a newspaper which circyidfes in such a respectabfe community, you have shown cxtremcly poor laste in printing such a photograph. Perhaps your future ‘*Sun- shine Girl’” photos would reflect more considcration and taste on your part C. Jung (Miss) West Vancouver, B,C. ‘rep.¢ I totally disagree with them and strongly believe the private sector, including private insurance companies, , available, can do it better, cheaper and "— more efficiently than govern- ment and government crown corporations. As a member of the Com- mittee on Crown Corpora- tions and now the Chairman of that Committee, I was privileged to be on the sub- committee enquiring into ICBC. From that. enquiry I came to the conclusion that the Corporation was that this appointment was made solely on- the basis of political gratitude with litthe consideration for the necessary experience in B.C. women’s - organizations. If the Advisory Council is to play any role in improving the status of ‘women in Canada, appointments to the CounciF “titi rise above political af ion. Women with knowledge of and a demanstrated commitment to women’s issues should be ap- pointed. We know that there were several well-qualified women who submitted their names for consideration (and we are not aware of which political party they belong to.). . I did not, nor with the information conclude that ICBC was more effective or more efficient than the private sector. In addition, I could not conclude that auto insurance in B.C. under ICBC was cheaper than under private insurance in other parts of Canada. Such a conclusion is impossible regardless of facts and figures provided by ICBC, . their employee’s union.or by panies. ICBC, in the product perience in real estate...’’. And this is the woman who will represent B.C. women’s organizations on a taxpayer- funded council? Unfortunately our com- plaints will arrive too late to change the present appoint- ment but we urge you and your fellow cabinet ministers to reconsider the system of making appointments to na- tional bodies primarily on the basis of party membershop. ICBC’s product and benefits are completely different from that sold elsewhere in Canada. In some instances. the benefits are better, in others worse, Part of my responsibility ~~ as a M.L.A. is to see that ICBC is operated in‘an effec- tive and efficient ‘manner. I believe they are and: § hope they. will continue that way. However, I also believe that government should not pro- vide services that can be pro- 3 vided by the private sector and that includes insurance. .: wed s private auto insurance _ For this reason, [ would:sup- . port a responsible program to return ICBC’s mandate to the private sector.
