Lime juice, cranberry juice and soda water combine for a bright red sparkling drink, or try ginger ale and grapefruit juice with a maraschino cherry and pincapple slice. BREAKFAST BONUS IT IS NEW YEAR’S Eve and almost everyone’s thoughts have turned to partying... and having a good time. That Means spicy food, booze, games, more booze, old friends and new and still more booze. And then, there is the mor- ning after, or moaning after. The hangover is as much a part of New Year’s Day as football is for many Cana- dians, and just as action packed. Nausea, gastnitis, pounding headaches... what’s so happy about New Year’s when you start i off feeling so rotten? There are ways to avoid the pain and suffering, suggests alcoholism treatment expert Dr. Richard N. Nuttall, president of Comprehensive Care Corporation, the pro- vider of the Care Unit chemical dependency treat- ment program. *“*“We always recommend that people really be aware of how much they drink,’’ Dr. Nuttall said. ‘‘Control the rate at which you drink — about one drink an hour. We also recommend that people eat when they drink. Not on- ly does cating cut down on drinking, it also helps absorb the alcohol. Since alcohol dehydrates, we also tell peo- Se: Special SECTION ple to drink juices, soft drinks and water interspersed with drinking alcohol.”’ “*We never recommend that reople drink on New Year’s or any other day,’’ Dr. Nuttall said. ‘‘You can celebrate without drinking. But we are not naive enough to think people won’t drink. We know they will. We just don’t want them to drive.”’ If you do wake up with a hangover, Dr. Nuttall says there really isn’t any cure. ‘*Everyone has a remedy. Some of our patients say that during thei drinking days they took aspinn before they went to bed. Or the next mor- ning they drank a quart or orange jyuice, which has sugar and helps metabolize the alcohol. ‘*‘We definitely don’t recommend the hair of the dog theory,”’ Dr. Nuttall continued. ‘‘Redoing the damage is not a good idea. It is simply called remedication.”’ ‘*Most hangover remedies rival the unpleasantness of the actual hangover ttself,’’ Dr Nuttall said. ‘*And while some people may just over- indulge once a year, over | milbon expenence hangovers almost every day.”" CONTINUED ON PAGE (72 New Year's Hours All branches closed January 1, 2 and 3 ben the New Years btobday all sin Branches of the North Shore Community Credit Chak wall be hosed om January 1 2 and $ All branches Open December 31 Al branches will be open during requdar business hours on New Years [ve December 51 °2 eggs ¢ Bacon or Sausage ¢ Hotcakes, Toast or Hashbrowns for only Every Monday Friday 8 am. 11 am Ohno 74 tang Automated | etler (C UIE) Machines will be m operation at Lomsdale lyon Valkey Marne [rtve and Park Koyal Branches HAPPY NEW YEAR Nerth Shore Community Credit Union Stix branches serving the North Shore “ The Price Is Right ” Park Royal's Friendly Restaurant Next to Eaton's Park Royal 1010 South Park Royal, W Van 922-8215 Tied eee
