THIS | ee shop, Balenciaga, is another example of new fall fashions, with bulky tweek jackets of different tex- tures and design, and lots of sweaters for a soft, chic look. FROM PAGE C4 sweaters, blouses and even belts. The other is evening wear, and this fall, designers have turned to the sophisticated dazzling (at least in the case of those we saw). The best examples are the basics, such as the sparkling black dinner jacket we fell in love with at Balenciaga’s, delicately lined inside and draped with sequins. The price was just over 500,000 lire (about $380 Canadian at the time), not bad for a designer garment. Ruffles are also big, as in the case of the soft, bluepur- zzling evenin * ple dresses we found at Ungaro’s. One clerk told us ruffles were included this year to create ‘a simple elegance’, though some designers were using them more than others. My favorites were the more subdued, ‘ruffle-less’ crea- tions; the plain black or white dresses cut down the back with a row of buttons, spiced up with the splash of a pink or blue waist belt. Dressing for fall depends on how much of a statement you want to make — the ltalians are ready for virtual- ly everything. > Next week: Looking for Laura Biagionti’s shop. 106 West 2nd St. North Vancouver 1983 - North Shore News.
