Dear Editor: I write to state strong en- dorsement of efforts taken by the Honourable . Jack Davis, MLA to legislate changes in taxi licensing throughout the- Lower Mainland, and to oppose criticism offered by Duart S. Mackhean, President of the Taxi Owners Association of B.C. under the heading “Local Taxi Licensing Best”. The present system of municipal-provincial licens- ing promotes inefficiency, caters to, monopoly taxi firms, denies incentive to im- prove the level of service and blocks the general public from choosing which taxi firm they wish to sup- port. In many suburban Dear Editor: I imagine the proposed logging of Lot 883 on Grouse Mountain will. be of some concern to the companies in- suring properties owned by Grouse Mountain Resorts. Vancouver is a hot bed of militant environmental ac- tivism and I am certain fear of reprisals against Grouse Mountain Resorts will ‘in-. spire ‘the companies: to.read- just their premiums accor-" dirigly. I pérsonally hope the potential threat of a, skiers. and users boycott will be suf- - ri ficient, to di those. who “ys find the local taxi se ceptable, you can walk. There is no other choice! Mr. Davis has suggested that all taxis be allowed to offer their. product ‘throughout the Greater Van- couver Regional District. This would decrease dead- heading, reduce costs, inject competition, and allow con- sumers to support the taxi company that provided the best service. With consumers gaining freedom to choose, clearly those operations that offered good service would gain, and those that continued with unsatisfactory service would have to pull up their socks or - lose ground. The criticism penned by hanks for the tip will irreversibly scar the face of our mountain. E.C. Johnson (former North Van resident) Mission, B.C. itain the status “quo. His efforts to applaud ac- countability to local councils must’ be challenged as the councils are virtually hand- cuffed * when dealing with monopolies and _ cartels, which clearly the Taxi Owners Association of B.G. supports. - Under a Provincial Motor Carrier Commission-GVRD system, each municipality is represented and any local concern could be forwarded by the Mayor concerned. Mr. MacLean has certain- ly made it clear that free enterprise is an abhorrent Dear Editor: Thank you for the sugges- tion printed in the recent edition of your paper (Joy Wee’s letter to the editor Ju- ly 6) regarding informing the public of the’ distance to the Capilano River Hatchery.
