“Y ‘set for takeover

Vancouver
YMCA looks set to
take over Cloverley
Elementary School
which was closed down
last year.

The North Vancouver
school board has approved a
proposal by its Surplus Faci
hies Committee which wall
likely mean a lease lasting
ten years at an annual fee of
$1.

The only opponent of the
plan was trustee Dr. Ross
Regan who said he was con-
cerned about public input on
the matter, particularly as he
felt that the property which
he estimated was worth $1.7
million, could make annual
revenues of $100.000.

Regan said he supported a
user-pay system and he con-
sidered it incumbent on the
board to see that the tax
payers of North Vancouver
and the province had a say
on the subject

Discussion on the plan was
preceeded by a presentabon

trom North Vancouver YM-
CA official Trueman Hirsch-
feld who said there would be
adequate street parking for
the 7.33 acre facility.

Hirschfeld added: “The
school board would be able
to take it back knowing that
it would be in good condi.
thon.”

Trustee Frank Warburton,
who said he supported the
proposal, said he was satis-
fied with the lease arrange-
ments termination clauses
which would allow the board
to take back the property
after three months’ notice in
the first year and 12 months
notice on subsequent
renewals.

Trustee Verna Smelovsky
felt the 10-year perod in-
volved was in their terms the
“near-future” and she did not
wish to rush into selling any

more of the board's
facilities.
In closing the debate,

Repan made the point that in
West Vancouver a similar
situation had arisen in which
a school had been leased out
for a nominal sum but it was
now polly to have leases
that would help offset debt
