A $90,000 request to the joint federal/ provincial conversion program was refused on the grounds that the program was _ for “private” installation, even though the municipal fleet would be converted. West Vancouver already had budgeted $190,000 for the program, but the ad- ditional $90,000 would have increased. the payback period to five years from 31”. Council decided to delay work on the conversion of public works and parks department vehicular fleets until the 1983 budget year. when the $90,000 additional funding can be secured, or when the required funds have received budget ap proval. The conversion program would convert gasoline and diesel fuel vehicles to run on compressed natural gas, an activity wholeheartedly endorsed by the provincial ministry of science. Alderman Don Lanskail said he was very surprised at the provincial government's ruling that the West Van program was a “private” installation. He supported council's decision, adding that “in the meantime we should try to break the log jam at the senior govern- ment level to get the support we need for conversion.” If the conversion program is completed, municipal staff estimate that approximately $60,000 could be saved annually in fuel costs.
