A7-Wednesday, November 19, 1980 - Nosth Shore News mailbox [eee Sex films better than violence Dear Editor: |! am writing this” in response to another letter which was published in your Nov. 2 Sunday News. The letter was protestung the showing of a pornographic movie on Oct. 25 (“Em- manuelle’). | was amazed at the puritamistic ignorance displayed by the letter writer whom | am forced to refer to as Name Withheld. At present. | am taking a psychology course at SFU and the professor spoke to the class on this subject recently He had just returned from a_ speaking engagement with the film censors from across Canada who were seeking his advice on this matter. , The professor's educated opimon on censorship of material was that violence ts more harmful than sex. We were told) about an ex- periment involving two groups of juveniles. One group was shown movies with an emphasis on sex and the other group was shown movies with an emphasis on violence The results were the juseniles shown por- nographic movies displayed little behaviour change while the group shown violent movies became highly aggressive. It would seem that Name Withheld is barking up the wrong tree. If anything ts to be banned from television, 1 should be movies like “The Omen” which was shown Oct. 29 on channel 5 at 9:00 when some small children are sull up and often unattended.
