12 - Wednesday, August &. 1990 - North Shore News = a 82} ASK THE VE Question: What should | do with | a jealous pet? When my new boyfriend moved in, my cat of many years starting doing things she had never doen before, like scratching fur- niture, wetting on our quilt in the bedroom and just plain mischief. Could she really be jealous? What can | do, I'm afraid we will have to get rid of her if she keeps misbehaving. Answer: Yes, pets can get very jealous if they feel that they are missing affection. Use of negative reinforcement may be necessary to help break the scratching habit. A spray of water and the word “no” are best. Keep the nails trimmed short and make sure the scratching post is in good shape. With a cat that pees in abnormal spots, a urine test should be done to be sure an infection is not pre- sent. Other than this, the best treatment is to spend more time with your cat, petting and playing. Get your boyfriend invclved. Get him to feed the cat so she recognizes him as a “good thing”. In short, lots of love! Question: My cat is a Persian and always gets a lot of mats. Even if t brush her regularly, she get ths mats all on her hind- quarters. {s there something lacking in her diet? What causes this? Can I prevent it? Answer: No secrets here. Consis- tent, regular (daily) grooming is necessary. Use the proper tools such as a long tooth comb and brush. Make sure all mats are brushed out before you bathe. otherwise the situation will get worse. Careful use of a dematting comb can assist you. It is sometimes kinder just to have the mats shaved and to start all over again.
