Cute raccoons are pests that rt to cause problems Dear Editor: You recently printed on your front page an appealing picture of a baby raccoon. It was feasting on succulent: garbage provided ‘by North Shore citizens. ; Many of us are now beginning to realize that these cute little rascals soon grow into marauding adults. . The raccoon’ population has multiplied signifi icantly during: the: last few years. ‘ « Once they were objects of curi-. osity. when, sighted in, an urban setting. ~< Now they are becoming real and persistent pests, and may soon _ become .a menace to domestic pets, and perhaps, even to- small children if an adult becomes rabid. -AS raccoons become more ur- banized they also’. become? less nocturnal, and many have now been seen in broad daylight. They are aggravating pests, too, . in that they are ‘destructive. raccoon My lawn and garden have been damaged by raccoons seeking worms in the soil. My fish pond has been ravaged, the goldfish have been eaten, and the water flowers destroyed. Song birds are becoming more scarce because..raccoons .pillage their eggs and nestlings. ‘Many roofs have been ripped open by females seeking. warm ‘nests in attics, where they can bear - up to eight kits annually. I have recently trapped four young raccoons, and have released them into the wild. 1 am.unsure whether they will . Survive; they may have lost their instinctive caution and fall prey to their natural predators. They may also have lost their natural ability to forage, seeing that.garbage has been plentiful and'easy to find. I believe that North Shore resi- dents and taxpayers have the right .to be able to enjoy. their homes and gardens without suffering the Freedom i 1S only for those who agree Dear Editor: .Oh;“come os, ane Jewish con-. spiracy? : _. Mr. Collins clearly only believes in freedom of speech for those who share his own twisted, big- oted views. Doug Collins must be a very _angry, spiteful, and insecure man to need to constantly smear and slander groups of ‘people in this way .— I'd feel sorry for him if 1 wasn’t so appalled at the garbage ' he spews out.
