Shere tradition By Layne Christensen Community Reporter NORTH Shore Haivest will be serving turkey with ali the trimmings to needy families again this year but its founder would be happier if the need didn’t exist. “My goal is to be out of business,” says David Foster, who is planning for the 10th annual North Shore Community Christmas Dinner. “Pd really like to read about poverty and hunger in same sort of history book.” Foster held the first dinner 10 months after he got off welfare, “the result of a life in the fast lane in the Bridsh Properties,” he says. That first dinner, in 1987, involved 10 businesses and organizations and fed 100 needy people. Since then, Foster esti- mates that more than 3,000 family members and individu- als, including 2,000 children, have shared in the Christmas dinner. Photo submitted SANTA and his Little Helpers will make sure the 10th annual North Shore Community Christmas Dinner is a festive occasion for fam- ilies in need. The annual event takes place Saturday night. Ir takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21 in the Capilano Room at the Lonsdale rec centre. Seating, is first come, first- served. Since the beginning, Save On Foods has been a major sponsor, supplying all the food — 14 murrkeys, two hams, “a hundred pounds of cranberries and a couple hundred pounds of potatoes and assorted veg- etables,” says Foster. Safeway will cook the turkeys. Shoppers Drug Mart is donating the table settings, decorations are coming from London Drugs. Chef Adissa LaFayette will oversee the food production. Seventy volunteers in black-tie will serve the festive feast. In the past, Special guests have included Winston Rekert of Neon Rider, Expo Ernie and weatherman Douglas Miller. This year, B.C. Lions fullback Sean Millington is expected to show up. Entertainment will be provid- ed by Rob De Cotes’ jazz trio. Those who attend the din- ner are mostly low-income families but there are others as well, including seniors who are without families over the holi- days and new immigrants looking to connect with their community. “Some families are new to Canada and are ceiebrating Christmas with us,” says Foster. “We get more ‘Merry Christmases’ from our Iranian families than anyone else!” Foster says support for the dinner is so strong that he gets calls from volunteers as early as August. “This dinner exemplifies what community is all about, community helping communi- ty, neighbor helping neighbor — the way it should be — and that’s the true spirit that is Christmas.” DISPLAY ADVERTISING CHRISTMAS HOURS & DEADLINES BOOKING/COPY DEADLINE Wednesday Dec. 25 Friday Dec. 27 Sunday Dec. 29 Wednesday Jan. 1 Friday Jan. 3 10 Sunday Jan. 5 Thursday Dec. 19 Friday Dec. 20 Monday Dev. 23 Friday Des. 27 Monday Dec. 30 Tuesday Dec. 31 4om 4pm 4:00pm 4:00pm 4:00pm 12 Noon The North Shore News will be closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Eve and New Years Day. re) Merry Christmas from all of us
