Always keep a lid
on cooking fires

FIRES AND bums caused by cook-
ing account for thousands of serious
and painful injuries each year, Many
of these injuries could have been
prevented or lessened if people were
more careful and if they knew how
to react to a cooking fire.

District of North Vancouver Fire
Services want you to protect your-
self while cooking and suggest these
safety tips.

Most cooking fires start with
grease. Cooking. oil, melted fats
from meats, and other grease, are
flammable liquids that can easily
flare up when they become very hot.

Be extra careful when cooking
with oil or juicy meats. Keep the
heat as low as possible and never
leave cooking unattended, even for a
minute. ;

If grease ignites while you're
cooking, you must smother the fire
guickly. If the fire is ina pan on your
stove top, smother it by sliding the
lid or 2 larger pan on top of the burn-
ing pan. :

_” Never throw water or flour on a
buming pan: Water will spread the
flames and flour will actually
explode! Don’t try to pick up the pan
to carry it across the room or outside.

These may seem like logical

actions, but they. cause : serious

injuries and make the fire worse.
Do not tum.on the exhaust fan
. over the stove. This will suck the fire
inside the walls of your home. If the
fire is in the oven, turn off the heat
and leave the door closed to cut off
air supply to the fire.
You can use a portable fire extin-
. guisher if you have one and know
how to use it.’A fire extinguisher is
an excellent: safety appliance for
your kitchen. But don’t wait until a
fire starts to learn how to use it.

injury.

As a preventive action, keep your
cooking appliances — including
stove tops, burners, ovens and broil-
ers — clean. Built up grease can
flare up easily, causing dangerous
and damaging fires.

Keep combustible materials —
paper towels, dish towels, paper
bags, cookbooks and food packag-
ing — away from the stove or other
heat source. Keep your kitchen fire
safe.
