Q: Why did my
drapes shrink?

= You may have purchased fabric and
had draperies custem made for your living
room. Later, you send the draperies to your
drycteaner for cleaning and finishing. When
they are returned, you notice that there is
extensive shrinkage ard you blame the
drycleaner for the damage.

Your cleaner asks you if you have an origi-
nal sample of the material, which you have. It
is carefully measured and then drycleaned
and finished. after which it shows the same
degree of shrinkage.

Many fabrics sold in bolt form are not com-
pletely preshrunk. Consequently, before
these fabrics are used to rnake draperies, they
should be drycleaned or washed, depending
on the care instructions. A complete
drycleaning and finishing or washing. tumble
drying, and finishing will help relas the fabric,
thus avoiding the unfortunate situation of
shrinkage in the finished product.
