Foundation

Earthquake shock waves are
transmitted through the ground and
foundation before being transmit-
ted up into the building structure.
Therefore, a weak or poorly can-
nected foundation may fai] first
and result in severe damage to the
rest of the building.

How the building is secured 10
the foundation is a critical consid-
eration, Picture how the earthquake
works: The ground shakes from
side to side and perhaps up and
down. The foundation. buried in
the ground, will move with the
ground, The building resting on it.
on the other hand will try to stay
put.
Therefore, unless the building is
secured to the foundation well, itis
likely to move independently of the
foundation and perhaps Mide off or
move with damaging results.

It is critical. therefore, that the
building be bolted securely to the
foundation.

This means that the building's
sill plate must be adequately
secured to both the concrete foun-
dation wall or pad and alse to the
support Studs or Maer joists above.
