‘Tories crewing the Titanic WATCHING PIERRE Campbell ancouncing her candidacy for the Tory leadership was a depressing experience. Why were those people cheer- ing? As the man in the West Van watering hole said, it was the Campbells who betrayed the McDonalds in the Scottish clan wars. Don't they know that every pol- itician since the late "60s has - betrayed this country as surely as the Campbells betrayed the McDonalds? The sellout got into full stride with Pierre Trudeau, the biggest disaster in Canadian history. Proof that he was a disaster is that the CBC has commissioned the creators of The Valour and The Horror to make a multi- million dollar series on him. Nothing in Wizapland succeeds as well as failure. Trudeau arrived on the scene wearing loafers and a scarf. No- “ body knew anything about him, but he did the right kind of mumbling and Trudeaumania stalked the streets of Toronto and ‘the beaches of Vancouver. Campbell also arrived on the _ scene wearing a scarf, plus blond hair and a big grin. She is now “the Pinup PM.”’. -Camptellmania is now being nurtured and ence again people don’t know what they are cheering _for. As a matter of principle we should run a mile from a pinup PM. When Trudeau was basking in the admiration of the mob, he annousced no program other than “participatory democracy ,’’ which turned out (o be grants to feft- wing pressure groups and crazies. Campbell has also announced no program. But she is for ‘‘in- clusive politics.”’ What docs that mean? The same as participatory democracy. Trudeau was played up in the media as Canada’s John F. Ken- , nedy, Campbell is being compared to Kid Clinton. The hoopla was cnough to put . Trudeau in, and in no time at all ‘the national debt began its climb to the sky. ” + Campbell has just discovered that debt, it seems, and promises to wrestle that devil to the “THE FOLLOWING ‘people ap- peared in North and West Van- ’ . couver. courts .recently: to face various charges: ; Before fudge Jerome Paradis in North Vancouver provincial court on March 16: ; .Michacl Alan. She doesn't say how. Trudeau promised to wrestle in- flation to the ground, but never quite got around to it. Trudeau never did a day’s real work in his life outside of politics and academe. You can say the same of Campbell. So Canada stands ready to be suckered again. All we know is that she is an intellectual snob and has pretty shoulders. Trudeau was also an inteliectual snob and had the body of a 25- year-old, What we should have learned, but probably haven't, is that there is no point in paying the slightest attention to what the politicians SAY. The only thing worth paying attention to is what they DO What has Campbell done? She has gone down the road hand in hand with Brian Baloney, and Baloncey is a failed con artist. People expected hii to be a Tory. Instead, he was just another liberal in a blue suit, From immigration to affir- mative action to bilingualism and the human rights nonsense to the financing of pressure groups, he hewed to the Trudeau policies. In the matter of the payoff to the Japanese he went further than Trudeau ever went and gave them nearly half a billion bucks, Which. was a case of buying votes with the taxpayers’ money. There was nothing he did to which Campbell said No. If she had, she wouldn't be in line for the Icadership.. naby, Vancouver and North Van- couver District.
