Donations since the program’s inception in 1988 have totalled over 600,300 pairs. Between now and New Year's Day, old unwanted eyeglasses can be dropped off at any of the 32 LensCrafters stores in Canada, including the one at Capilano Mall in North Vancouver. Ladies’ fashions by La Mona, as well as other selected designer labels from Enda B. Fashions, ‘will be on sale at 50% savings and als in developing countries. Thousands of glasses collected during the Give the Gift of Sight Program are distributed during an annual optical mission conducted by LensCrafters and Lions Clubs International. This year, a team of 20 optom- etrists and opticians frem LensCrafters and Lions provided free eye examinations to 6,400 Panamanians and dispensed nearly 6,000 pairs of glasses that exactly or nearly matched the prescrip- tions of those in need. Among the glasses dispensed were donations by Chevy Chase, Rob Morrow, Sophia Loren and Gerald Ford. The team left behind 13,000 additional pairs for local optometrists and Lions Clubs to distribute. : ‘Millions of people worldwide need glasses,’’ states Jim Cameron, a past director of Lions Clubs International. ‘‘One child in four, for example, cannot see well enough to Jearn to read. Donated glasses offer thousands of people the opportunity to see clearly for the first time in their lives.”" LensCrafters joined Lions Clubs International’s effort to collect and recycle eyeglasses in 1988. These glasses are distributed in developing countries because legal constraints generally prohibit dispensing eyeglasses in the U.S. and Canada. “The simple act of donating your old glasses can make a huge difference in someone’s lfife,”’ savs LensCrafters president and CEO Dave Browne. ‘‘On your next trip to the mall, just give us your old glasses and we'll see that they get lo someone in need.’’ host fashionable fundraiser more.
