Contrary to popular belief,
many bulbflowers can also make a
marvelous contribution to a
heaven-scent garden.

The hyacinth is an excellent ex-
ample. Not yet as widely planted
in Canada as in Europe, modern
hyacinth hybrids are among the
most deliciously scented flowers in
the garden.

May. A favorite of the Dutch,
spring wouldn't be the same in the
Netherlands without the scent of
hyacinths in the air.

The robust scent of paper white
Narcissi is known to anyone who
has enjoyed these easily forced
bulbs in their home in winter.

Unfortunately, these bulbs are
not hardy and are generally grown
only indoors.

According to The Netherlands
Flowerbulb Information Center,
however, there are some scented
winter-hardy narcissi such as jon-
quils: namely the creamy-white
cheerfulness or yellow cheer-

fulness, that will do the job nicely.

Tulips are familiar bulbs that
are better known for their splen-
did color and distinctive shape
than their fragrance.

There are, however, wonderful-
jy aromatic tulips as well. The
yellow bellona, pink Christmas
marvel and orange-red High
Society are all single-flowered
scented varieties.

Gardeners think ahead out of
necessity, and now is the time in
much of the country to plant the
summer bulbs and tuberous plants
that will grace summer gardens.

For those who miss their spring
hyacinths, try galtonia candicans,
which are often called the summer
hyacinth.

They are tall plants that can
reach 50 inches in height and their
white flowers bloom in August.

The bulb should be planted near
the surface. Galtonia can with-
Stand winter if planted in a sunny
spot and heavily mulched.

Planting a variety of summer-
blooming bulbs this spring can
brighten the borders and beds of
any summer garden.

Spring or summer, fragrant
flowers are a gardener’s delight.
Along with flowering shrubs, an-
nuals and other perennials, bulb
flowers can add a_ delightful
