DO NOT adjust your tele- vision set. You are entering the KIDZONE. By Barbara Black News Reporter KIDZONE is a Knowledge Network program for kids aged seven to 12. It started in 1989 and it is now in its third season, offer- ing a half-hour of bit-sized seg- ments on subjects from bungee jumping and comic book collect- ing to oil recycling and movie- making. The show airs on Sundays at 8:30 a.m. or Fridays at 7 p.m. This year, three North Van- couver kids, Sarah Chalke, Aly Jiwani and Garin Josey, act as hosts for the award-winning pro- gram. Zap talked to them about their participation in KIDZONE. SARAH CHALKE Fifteen-year-old Sarah Chalke of Handsworth Secondary is in her second year with the show. She started out modeling about five years ago and is now focusing more on acting. She takes drama at school and has also been in one commercial where she dances “with somebody who is supposed to be my grandfather.”’ Her favorite KIDZONE shoot so far was on location bungee jumping in Nanamio, although she didn’t take the plunge herself. Chalke thinks the good thing about KIDZONE is that it teaches kids ‘tin such a fun way.’” Is she famous at school? ‘*Well, LAST WEEK Zap asked whether it was a good idea ta move the capital from Ottawa to Winnipeg. A former politi- cian has proposed to do just that, but most of you thought otherwise. 1 think it’s really dumb. Qttawa “s the best place. (don’t agree with the thing, it would just cost too much, It’s pretty dumb to do that. Winnipeg’s not much of a city. Halifax. Winnipeg is no good for a capital of Canada and it won't make it any balance. Qn one hand I think it could be really good if it could be ‘moved to Winnipeg, but on the other hand, it costs so much and right now Canada just can’t afford that. I don’t think it should be done because that’s pretty dumb, because you can’t move capitals that easily you know. But- my friends do sometimes.” She misses about one day of _ school per week filming for the ‘show, but it doesn’t affect her grades too much. As for acting, she says she always liked doing it. But she’s not sure if she'll do it as a career \ — ‘*There’s so much choice!’” she says. ALY JIWANI Aly Jiwani, who is 13 and at- tends Balmoral Junior High School, says he’s always been in- terested in acting. Jiwani completed the John Casablanca teen modelling pro- gram but thinks that TV acting is were it’s at for him. He’s been a movie extra for several locally shot movies in- cluding Who’s Harry Crumb and says he ‘‘just loves being in front of the camera.’ Jiwani just earned his brown belt in karate and also loves sports, especially hockey and basketball. But his greatest love is acting which he wants to make his career. In the future he'd like to do a series ‘‘like Beverly Hills 90210.” This is his first year with KID- ZONE, GARIN JOSEY Another KIDZCNER, Garin Josey, of Sutherland Secondary, a managed to make it through. the -: first audition of 200 kids to be chosen as one of the seven hosts of the show. Josey started acting | in school plays and went on to train at the North Shore’s Breck Academy and at Schacter Studios.
