MAILBOX Landlords prejudiced against our children Dear Editor: As a new resident to the North Shore I am totally appalled at the prejudice shown to children. We relocated to the North Shore from Squamish so ! could further my education, and because house prices are so high we are forced to rent. But this is very difficult because no one wants to rent to children. They don’t say this right out: what they say is ‘‘quiet residence’’ or ‘‘adult quarters’’ or ‘‘only two people allowed.’* My husband, myself and our two school-age children should be a landlord’s dream. We don’t smoke, our only pet is a budgie and our youngest daughter has asthma and an allergy to dust and pets. We are looking for a new place because the place we have now is making our daughter sick. Ali the neighbors have dogs and cais and they smoke. Also, the old tenants had pets. It’s a duplex and it also has no place for the kids to play. I am writing you this letter to ask you to help me make people aware that kids are people too. We thought we had found the perfect place this weekend but lost it to people with no kids. Hally Korum North Vancouver Swarbrick spent little time on clarification Dear Editor: I am writing in response to the article by Brian Swarbrick which appeared on page seven of your Aug. 23 edition. Mr. Swarbrick states that he was asked to clarify the situation at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital. In fact, he actually spends very little time on this particular issue. In- stead he teils a tale which ridicules Continue fighting for social benefits Dear Editor: We owe a great vote of thanks to the senior citizens who braved the rain and cold at Whistler to tell the First Ministers, in no uncertain terms, that the social benefits Canadians have fought for, including our health and medicare system, are not up for demolition. Quite a few of the seniors who showed up were from North and West Vancouver. Some of the ministers declined to come and talk to our seniors. Arrogance might have something to do with that, but more than likely, it is because quite a few of them are playing to the tune of the transnationals, hell bent on reducing us to the level of Mexico. Most of us will face old age at some stage, and those seniors have done us a big favor. Now, if we all join together, there just is a chance that we can keep the things which have made this country great and liveable, rather than just being a piece of real estate to be exploited and sold for a fast buck. On the subject of abortion, I see it as another situation where the more powerful person exerts his will over the less powerful one. Those of us who cry out for victims of abuse, whether it be wife abuse, child abuse or other similar situations must also recognize that the victims of abor- tion (the ultimate abuse) need to be protected.
