Twenty-one staff members, in- cluding typesetters, paste-up ar- tists, a special projects person, two supervisors and manager Vicki Sargisson, work six days 2 week, almost around the clock, to get the News out on schedule. Much of their time is spent do- ing the real estate section of Fri- day’s newspaper, which averages 48 pages. The display ads that are found in the rest of the newspaper take two days to produce, so the Pro- duction department gets the ad layouts from the sales repre- sentatives two days before press day. For the Friday edition, for example, the material for the ads is supplied by 5 p.m. on Tuesday. That night, the copy and photos needed for the ads are ordered from the appropriate department. The next day, the ad is typeset, pasted up and proofread by the departiment’s proofreader. On Thursday morning — press day — a copy, or ‘‘proof,”’ of the ad is faxed or delivered to the ad- vertiser, who checks it and tele- phones in aay corrections by noon. Then the corrected ads are placed on the page along with the editori- al stories running in Friday’s paper. The department produces be- tween 60 and 70 new ads for the NEWS photo Cindy Goodman ROD BARTLETT, a nine-year employee with the North Shore News, is one of Production's paste-up artists. The artists use ttie ‘‘cut and paste”’ method to assemble the articles, advertisements and photos on each page, readying it for the printer. average issue. The remaining ads in the paper — there are usually about 130 in total — are repeats from earlier issues. Meanwhile, the Editorial department has been designing the look of the page and filling i in news and feature stories in the space around the ads. Copies of these page layouts are sent to Produc- tion, along with photos, headlines, and a list of the stories that are be- ing used in that issue. The stories are sent through Production’s digital typesetter, the film is processed and comes out in long columns called ‘“‘galleys.” The galleys are then cut up and pasted on to the correct page, under the correct headline, accord- ing to the editorial page layout. Photocopies of the completed page are sent up to the Editorial department, whose proofreader checks it for spelling, continuity See Production Page 18 COLD BEER & WINE STORE now open U1 am-11 pm daily HE AVALON HOTEL 1025 Marine Dr., North Vancouver 985-4181 17 - Friday, December 15, 1989 - North Shore News Oe , v0 af a , ta 2 rice vorce win aieo wist wsicodten north shore. fsexeh Y Boxing Day Brunch : New Year's Eve ae . a ; ys Tt DP LPTIRTE RE SEE BISSETT : EEE ZEN t PETE LETRAS Se Saturday Brunch Sunday Brunch Dine by harp music Wed. nights Book now for the Holiday Season — seating from 10 to 100 “Catering Hot and Cold Hors d’oeuvres 2427 Marine Drive, West Van. 926-8838 WARNING: ATTHIS RATE YOUR NEIGHBORS MAY TURN GREEN WITH ENVY. 11.50% 33-MONTH MORTGAGE* Prenor Trust's new 33-month closed mortgage means a lot of good things.
