Janse 9 set The Naked Gun: Front the Files of Police Squad! *** (Paramount) Rated M (at the Plaza, Denman Place, Park Royal, Richport, Lougheed Mall, Eagle Ridge 6, Willowbrook 6) LESLIE NIELSEN flexes his artistic muscles in the role of a lifetime. He moonwalks. He sings opera. He saves the Queen. Yes, Det. Lt. Frank Drebin is back. Chances are you missed the six episodes of Police Squad! (in col- or) aired some years back. Hot on the heels of the comedy hit Airplane!, the creative team of David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and TIM BELL film reviewer Jerry Zucker were let loose with their own shotgun style of humor, but the show fizzled in the ratings. Never ones to avoid self- plagarism, they have resurrected the bumbling detective for their latest caper. The nominal plot involves a conspiracy to assassinate Queen Elizabeth during her visit to Los Angeles. Drebii’s chief suspect is Mr. Ludwig (Ricardo Montalban), a well-respected financier with a taste for beauty — at any price. eee _ Excellent “ss — Very Good «eo =~ Average * - Poor He’s also behind a drug ring that Frank's partner (O.}. Simpson) lit- erally stumbles into, before being pumped 47 times (give or take). Throwing the poker-faced Frank off the scent is Ludwig's delicious secretary, Jane (Priscilla Presley) who makes nice-nice with smiles he can feel all the way down to his hip pocket. But nothing and no one can stop Frank from cracking the case, even after he's been told to turn in his gun (naked or otherwise). It just means a little improvisation — say, impersonating an opera singer about to warble the national an- them in front of the Queen and 20 million T.V. viewers. The jokes come so thick and fast, that you'll be winded after 10 minutes. Smothered by her pious aunt’s strict Catholic upbringing, she nursed the abusive woman during her declining years instead of committing her to a home. Three yeais after her aunt's death, Judith is scraping by middle age as a piano teacher, and smoothing out the rough spots with a bottle. Bob Hoskins enters the picture as the wayward brother of her landlady. She misinterprets his mercenary interest in her with an overly romantic imagination. After realizing the painful truth, she finds the comfort of whisky and religion have their limitations.
