WEST VAN CHESS TOURNEY Piasetski prevails INTERNATIONAL MASTER Leon Piasetski of Vancouver in a hard-won match took the grand prize in the West Vancouver Open Chess Tournament recently. Facing off against John Donaldson of Seattle, also an In- ternational Master, the first game was a draw, as was the first speed game to break the tie. In an ex- citing final match of speed and nerve, former Quebec champion Piasetski prevailed, and moved up in rank to number three in B.C. Donaldson, a Washington champion, was cap- tain of the U.S, Olympic team in 1986 and is ranked number two in the state. Evidence of the tough competi- tion in this section saw three Na- tional Masters tied for third place: Alex Kuznecov of Burnaby, former Canadian cadet champion: Nigel Fullbrook of Vancouver, 1974 Canadian junior champion and 1985 B.C. Champion; and Dennis Allen, of Hamilton, Ont. Junior Champion, Gary. io. iy Golden Age: Ladies: Marie Von Rosenbach (age 84) Gentlemen: John Hopkinson An exciting two-day Junior Tournament held at Park Royal’s South Mall saw over 60 partici- pants showing a revival of interest in the centuries-old game of chess. More than 20 players were under / 10 years old, and almost 15 per - cent were female. The Junior Open Section A was won by Gary Basanta of Victoria,: an unprecendented consecutive four-year winner of the Junior B.C. Championship. Second place went to Nicholas Spears of Van- couver and third was Simon MeNair. Fifteen participants were chosen to play in the cadet section, with the winner awarded entry to the Canadian cadet championship scheduled for spring 1988, trans- portation and support to the tour- aament. Winner of the B.C. Cadet Championship was Howard Wu of Victoria, who turned 12 during play. Wu also tied for first place with Eric @inrichsen in the Junior B section. Junior C section winner was nine-year-old Christopher Wu. Over 150 participants entered, with more than 80 in the major tournament, 18 of whom have master class rating. WIN-PAK 4a, North Van hockey player joins U. of Maine team A NORTH Vancouver hockey player will be joining the University of Maine’s hockey team following the college’s recruitment of B.C. hockey players to build the top college squad in the U.S. Dave Wensley joins a host of other B.C players recruited by the Black Bears, the University of Maine team that is listed among the top school hockey squads. When he assumed the post of head coach four years ago, Shawn Walsh came to B.C. and picked up two goaltenders and three defencemen. Now Canadian players are the backbone of the team, a main con- tender in collegiate play. Other B.C. team members include Bruce Major of Vernon, Dave Nonis of Burnaby and Campbell Blair of Prince George.
