Income tax, introduced in the early part of this century as a tem- porary measure, is still with us today. Sales tax is levied on goods from gasoline to liquor and clothes. Municipalities tax their residents according to the assess- ed value of the property they own. With these tax dollars, the governments provide services ranging from social services to libraries and police protection. But recent reductions in many services have left a number of people grumbling that they are not getting the value they deserve for their hard-earned money. This week, the Inquiring Reporter wants to know if people think they are getting good value for all their tax dollars. VAN DISTRICT COUNCIL Suite bylaw introduced NORTH VANCOUVER District junior council moved Monday to introduce a rezoning bylaw clearing the way for the legalization of in-law suites in the municipality. The junior council, consisting of North Vancouver students sitting in for regular council and staff to mark Local .Government Awareness ‘Week, called for a public hearing on the bylaw for June 15, The rezoning bylaw limits se- cond kitchens to in-law suites, defines cooking facilities and the size of in-law suites, defines com- mon-law relationships for the pur- * poses of the bylaw, ups off-street parking requirements for single- family homes with in-law suites, and sets maximum fines for of- fences against the bylaw at $2,000. Paul Hargreaves. ‘‘l was quite amazed at how large the problem is in North Vancouver. .Apparently in some areas it’s as high as 25 per cent,’’ he said. Junior ald.
