2 ~ Friday, January 23, 1987 - North Shore News W.Van leads pack for money earners WEST VANCOUVER may be home to Canada’s highest average income earners, but itis far from a pristine land of milk and honey, accor- ding to the municipality's mayor. By TIMOTHY RENSHAW News Reporter Don Lanskail said figures released by Revenue Canada Tuesday showing West Vancouver as having the country's highest average annual personal income for the second year running, don’t tell the whole story. “Averages are misleading,”’ Lanskail said, ‘‘because half the people (in West Vancouver) are below that average. We have the same problems as any other com- munity."’ According to Revenue Canada figures culled from the 1984 tax returns of 100 selected Canadian communities, West Vancouver res- idents led the country with an average income of $30,742, which is up from “West Vancouver’s 1983 average of $29,554. Second behind West Vancouver in average annual earned income for 1984 was Markham, Ont. with $26,273. Despite the various problems facing West Vancouver, Lanskail said it was no accident that the municipality continues to attract people in higher income brackets. “It’s a very attractive municipality,’ he said. ‘I've trav- elled to a good part of the Western World and I’ve never seen a place that even comes close.”” Also in the top 10, North Van- couver slipped to eighth place overall from fifth place the previous two years, with an average overall income of $22,218. Because the averages are based on municipalities that have over 22,500 income tax returns filed, the two North Vancouver municipalities were amalgamated for the purposes of the Revenue Canada calculations. North Vancouver’s average was up slightly from 1983 when the average annual income was $21,601. North Vancouver City Mayor Jack Loucks said he was ‘“‘happy We also have a limited quantity of ’86 Toyota demonstrators priced to move! to see people carning a good in- come, but it’s such a broad, general statistic. Mm not certain what it really means. It's fine as trivia, | suppose."’ According to Revenue Canada, self-employed cCoctors and surgeons had the tighest annual average inc me in 1984 with $93,597. Figures also showed 287 Cana- dians with annual incomes of at allin 1984, nian $250,000 who paid no income tas GRAND REOPENING OPEN JANUARY 29 WE ARE EXPANDING TO MEET YOUR NEEDS IN WEST VAN PRODUCE AND FRESH CUT & POTTED FLOWERS ONLY.
