32 - Friday, August 29, 1986 - Nerth Shore News Entertainment. x Festival | to hit | jupon the| | fringes THE SECOND Annual Vancouver Fringe Festival of alternate theatre and performance art is set to go with over 400 performances by 100 different groups. It all takes place Sept. 12-21 in the Mt. Pleasant area of Van- couver. Performances run from noon to well beyond midnight. “This is not an ordinary festi- val,’’ says producer Joanna Maratta. ‘It’s the Fringe. Shows are going up at the oddest times, and it’s a real minefield. You never know what you’re going to come across.”’ Maratta knows of a rare treat for nocturnal theatre buffs: Persephone and Hades, a welcome addition to the Fringe’s interna- tional schedule by the Mobius Per- forming Group from Boston. SLEEPLESS NIGHT Persephone is an interactive au- dience participation piece that starts at 12:30 a.m., running in- definitely, Each performance dif- fers in content as well as running time; the question is how, when, and in what manner will the au- dience emerge from the under- world. As well as the exciting interna- tional shows coming to the Fringe this year, there are scores of new plays by local playwrights and per- formers. Maratta is particularly excited by a segment of the festival called New Realities in Canadian Video, which includes seven video shows. Another Fringe show that in- corporates video is by Mentreal’s Theatre Zoopsie. The performance is in French and uses !0 video monitors. The Vancouver Fringe Festival also has the classics of drama well represented: Beckett, Brecht, Shepherd, Gogal, Mayakovsky, Tremblay and Mamet. Another addition to the Fringe is the Fringe Club, downstairs at Vancouver’s Tonite Night Club at 315 E. Broadway. To kick off the Fringe Club, there will be a party on Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. for all Fringe enthusiasts. CLUB SCENE During the Festival, the Fringe Club will be open from 2 p.m. till 2 a.m. as a place for audience and performers to meet, discuss the shows, and compare notes. The opening ceremonies are at Guelph Park, 8th and Scotia, on Saturday Sept. 13 from 10 a.m. till 1 p.m. The opening will feature enter- tainment on stage and a barbecue. Street entertainment will be happening throughout Mt. Pleas- ant during the festival and a Fringe reading series at Kestral Books at Main and Broadway will present the works of known and unknown Vancouver writers. Fringe Information Centres will be open from noon till 8 p.m. at three locations: Heritage Hall, 3102 Main at 15th; Kingsgate Mall, Kingsway and Main; and at 2422 Main at Broadway. ‘‘It’s going to be nuts,’’ says Maratta. ‘‘Be there or be normal!” DYNAMIC MDRIVM2/MD-4 DYNAMIC MD-?
