RECOMMENDED New course for WV education? WEST VANCOUVER schools will be facing some major changes for the ‘“‘better’’ over the next couple years says superintendent Ed Carlin and some of those will start this September if the board approves them. By BILL BELL Carlin unveiled a_ partial view of his ‘vision of the future," Plan 45, Monday night at an open public meeting. That includes the im- mediate start of a Pacific Rim Studies Program at West Vancouver Secondary School, a Secondary French Immersion Program at Sen- tinel Secondary School and an International Bac- calaureate Program at Hillside Secondary School. The Pacific Rim Studies program, which according to Carlin fits in with the recent Ministry of Education pro- nouncements on offering Chinese and Japanese language training, could at- tract students to the district. Courses to be offered would include an introduc- tory and second year Japanese course. “We would alse offer an option of a third year Japanese for those students wishing more detailed knowledge of the language,” Carlin said. Another course would be Pacific Rim studies; a one year course offered at the Grade 11 or {2 level. It would focus on the historical, geographical and cultural aspect of the Pacific Rim countries. The third course, Economics of the Pacific Rim, would look at the cur- rent development of trade and commerce with Pacific Rim countries, ‘‘with par- ticular emphasis on Canada’s relationship . and potential trade with them.”’ French Immersion at Sen- tinel would begin at the Grade Seven level in September 1985. The recommendation cails for 62.5 per cent of all courses to: be taught in French at the Grade Seven level, while in grade eight and nine it would drop to 50 per cent. - The International Bac- calaureate Program was originally designed to provide an internationally recognized program of studies for students who travelled with their families to temporary Become a Friend of BC's Children's Hospital.
