Wilder might well be ask- ing himself the same question as writer-director ard prin- cipal character in his latest comedy film, The Woman In Red. An American re-make of the French film Pardon Mon Affaire, The Woman In Red leaves Wilder on a narrow ledge of comedy, with barely enough room to get a few laughs. It’s an old plot with no new twists. Middle age and the consequences of in- fidelity for the happily mar- ried man. Teddy Pierce is a quiet, successful advertising consul- tant with two kids, an attrac- tive wife and an altogether ordinary life. Until the day an alluring, sensual woman called Charlotte (Kelly La Brock) waves the red in front of him. Charlotte dances over top of a ground level ventilation shaft, billowing her red dress up around her arms and revealing her long, leggy looks to Teddy. Shy, hesitant Teddy becomes a raging bull, ready W.VAN ARTIST By COLIN LAMONT to charge in and claim Charlotte, throwing caution to the winds and all thoughts of marriage from his mind. Wilder plays his part with competence but no imagina- tion. There is no straying from a dull plot, no new lines and no sudden twists. Teddy is just another quiet, sensitive guy who sets out to make a sexual fantasy come true. Most of Teddy’s friends are having their own extra- marital affairs with the same predictable results. A wife dumps one and phone calls in the middle of the night send another off to the bed of his girlfriend while her husband is off at work. In one of the few scenes with any depth to it all, Teddy’s gay frend Buddy gets dumped after cheating on his lover, but finds that Teddy is ready to offer moral support. The woman in red, Charlotte, is well cast as Kel- ly La Brock, who turns in a Photos honored PHOTOGRAPHY by Stefan Schulhof, of Schulof Photography in West Van- couver, has been selected for display in the 1984 print col- lection, a series of top scoring entries from the Professional Photographers of Canada annual photographic competition. But Le Brock is hampered by a poor script with corny lines like, ‘‘l want you more than I have ever wanted any other man,’’ as she whispers to Teddy in her seduction scene. And that is the main problem with this film. The characters are so narrow that the audience can expect few, if any, surprises. ~~ The film’s musical score by Stevie Wonder is one of the better merits of this movie but it is not enough to carry the cast over a boring, all- too-familiar script. The message of this film seems to be that married life is really better than one night stands, but after watching this film, some people may feel in need of a little excitement, even just for a night.
