A8 - Wednesday, May 12, 1982 - North Shore News SS mailbox Hike foreign student fees Dear Editor: The way to go Ontario! Upping foreign student fees makes sense, especially when their parents are well- to-do and they can go anywhere at any time. Ontario has had enough. It is imcreasing its foreign student fees from 30 per cent to 50 per cent of cost this Fall. It's aiming at 70 per cent in 1983 and 100 per cent in 1984! Compare this with 10 per cent in British Columbia and you can see why U.B.C., Simon Fraser and the University of Victoria continue to attract foreign students in their thousands. , Most European United States and universities recover all their costs. That is why their fees are now in the order of $10,000 a year. We in B.C. are a soft touch by comparison. We're still charging less than $1,000 on the average for our own students and foreign students alike. We, the taxpayers, pay the difference. I'm all for paying something to help foreign students who really need financial help. Give them government financed scholarships if necessary. But don't help those who don’t need any help. Our tax burden is heavy enough already! Hon. Jack Davis, M.L.A. North Vancouver-Seymour Sunshine ‘person’ preferred Dear Editor: Instead of having Sun- shine Girls in the North Shore News, I would rather prefer to see “Sunshine Person Of The Week” or “Citizen Of The Week” or “Person Of The Week.” Show the North Shore community what that particular person has achieved the award for, whether he/she be a school child or a 90 year young individual. I'm sure if you approached the schools to work in collaboration with you, that would encourage the students to do good deeds or something good, worthy of being nominated student of the week, or something to that effect. If I know of someone who is doing some outstanding service to the community, I could write in and ask that he/she be nominated NEWS thanked for cancer help Dear Editor: On behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society, British Columbia and Yukon Division, I would like to express our deepest gratitude to you and the North Shore News for the tremendous support you have given us during our April Campaign. The tremendous success of this year’s campaign is due in no small part to the assistance you gave us in the form of publicity. This year’s coverage was excellent, with the help of Marc Howard. Jean Reid, and Anne Hallstein. For the first time in many years, we found that the vast majority of households were aware of our canvass and its goals - and, as aé_= result, were prepared to support our Campaign. The North Shore News has performed an invaluable community service by ts generous support, for which we are extremely grateful Sally Smith North Shore Campaign Coordinator sunday brunch 2 FOR 1 SPECIAL!
