Roseline Beamon, 24, a Nigerian student at California State University, was arrested for smuggling the banned snails last week after getting off an = in ternational flight at -Los Angeles ‘International Airport. Customs and U.S. Agriculture agents said they found snails hidden in a pair of boots (she wasn’t wearing them), in the lining of her handbag and the fining of her jacket. They reportedly also found eight greenish- yellow snail eggs and what appeared to be a partially consumed tomato im_ her effects. Miss Beamon, who was released on $5,000 personal recognizance bail, could not be reached for comment on whether or why she brought the snails in. Giant African snails are considered quite tasty in many parts of the world. The Agriculture Department, however, doesh't like the creatures. In 1969, some giant African snails taken to Florida as pets escaped and started eating the orange crops, causing extensive damage. The snails have a reputation as voracious eaters that are capable of taking the bark off trees or gobbling the paint off the side of a home. Ted Fisher, .a biologist at University of California at Riverside, said they could become a pest if they got loose and bred in large numbers. But the shmy creatures seized at the airport cannot get loose. “They're dead," said Agriculture Department official Paul Whitly. “Some of them were really big - up to a foot long. We killed them with methyl bromide gas and put them in the freezer. I guess they'll be evidence if the case poes to trial.” ina wet driveway. “Wet feet in that situation . would make the body a good: - to the. ground which could result in“ conductive path severe injury or death,” warns B.C.
